Quick Summary

There are two main ways to charge a plug-in electric car (BEV or PHEV) at home:

  • Standard domestic 3-pin 13A socket
  • Dedicated home charge point, typically wall mounted

Traditional 13A sockets are not designed for long-term EV charging and are slow. We recommend installing a dedicated home charging station where you park your EV at home and using the 3-pin portable charger option as an occasional emergency backup.
