Frequently Asked Questions
FAQs
How long will it take to charge my car?
As a guide, a UK-rated (10A) portable 'granny' charger delivers about 2.3kW. A typical hybrid battery of 13kWh charges from empty in about 6 hours. For a fully electric car, the charger adds roughly 8 miles of range per hour, or around 75 to 100 miles overnight, which comfortably covers a typical day's driving.
Is it safe to charge from a 3-pin socket every night?
Yes, as long as the socket and wiring are in good condition ā a qualified electrician would be able to confirm. Plug the charger directly into a wall socket, never a multi-way adaptor, and check the plug now and then for warmth or discolouration. If you plan to charge via a 3-Pin socket regularly, a dedicated EV-rated socket is highly recommended.
How accurate are these figures?
They're estimates for a 10A charger, allowing for typical charging losses and the share of the battery your car actually uses. Real world results vary with your car, the weather, how you drive and your tariff. Cold weather in particular slows charging and reduces range. Electricity prices are dated in the small print and updated when the Ofgem price cap changes.
Why is it limited to 10A when standard UK sockets are rated at 13A?
Although UK 3-Pin plugs and sockets are rated at 13A, charging draws a high continuous current for many hours at a time, often night after night. Running at maximum capacity would put significant strain on the plug, socket and household wiring, leading to heat build-up, particularly in dated sockets. To reduce this strain and lower the risk of overheating, charging is capped at 10A in line with UK industry best practice for prolonged sessions.
