Frequently Asked Questions
FAQs
Will using an extension cable slow down my charging?
No. The cable is rated for the full 32A, so your home charger delivers its full power through it. That's up to 7.4kW on a single-phase cable, or up to 22kW on a three-phase cable. Your actual charging speed is set by what your car and chargepoint can handle, not by the extension.
Will a three-phase cable work with my single-phase charger?
Yes, without any issue. Three-phase cables are fully backwards compatible, so you'll charge at your home charger's maximum, usually up to 7.4kW, from day one. The three-phase capability sits there waiting for when you need it, whether that's at a public chargepoint or a future home upgrade, up to 22kW.
Why get a three-phase extension cable if my charger is single-phase?
Two reasons. First, most public chargepoints (Type 2 AC) in the UK are three-phase, so you'll get up to 22kW whenever you plug in away from home, roughly three times the speed of a single-phase cable.
Second, it future-proofs your setup. If you ever move, upgrade, or change cars, this cable will still be the right one. Paying once for a cable that covers every scenario tends to work out better than replacing a single-phase one down the line.
Is the extension cable waterproof?
The cable is rated IP55, which means it's protected against dust and water sprayed from any direction - the sort of weather a typical British downpour throws at it.
Avoid submerging it, jet-washing it, or leaving it sitting in deep puddles for long periods. When you're not charging, we'd recommend storing it in the carry bag.
Does my car manufacturer actually approve extension cable use?
Most modern EVs charge fine through a properly rated Type 2 extension, but manufacturer guidance differs brand to brand, and some are more cautious than others. We'd recommend a quick look at your vehicle and charger manuals before first use. If you're unsure, get in touch and we'll help you check.
Is it safe to run the cable across a pavement or driveway?
The cable is built to be driven over without damage and the connectors are IP55-rated, so contact with wet ground is fine. For public pavement crossings, you may wish to use a cable protector mat if pedestrians are likely to be walking over it regularly, both for their safety and to keep the cable in good condition.
